Abstract

The main theme for this year's ISHEID is ‘fighting deadly viruses around the world’. New emerging, or re-emerging viruses threaten our health and, just as HIV appeared 30 years ago, these uncontrolled micro-organisms are also spreading worldwide. The most terrible recent example has been the Ebola epidemic. However, other viruses seen as ‘benign’ can also be a threat to our health and well-being, for example hepatitis E, coronaviruses and influenza. ISHEID remains centred on HIV and HCV but has also widened its scope to include new and emerging infections.
